People want to be recognized by a supervisor, and that need does not go away because you think they ought to be self-motivated. The answer is to build recognition into your routine instead of waiting to feel inspired. A colleague of mine started each morning with twenty pennies in one pocket and moved one across every time she praised somebody, and her pocket was empty by the end of the day.
